CHOP Named the Nation’s Best Pediatrics Department for 2018

PediatricsFor the fifth year in a row, we are excited to announce that U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey has awarded our department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania first place in pediatric medical education. It is the 14th consecutive year that CHOP’s pediatric program has ranked either first or second place among U.S. medical schools — a testament to the hard work, commitment, and care that our faculty exhibits as they relentlessly prepare our physicians and research scientists for a bright future.

“I am delighted that our department of Pediatrics remains the nation’s best, and I congratulate the faculty and staff for their sustained record of excellence,” stated Madeline Bell, president and chief executive officer of CHOP, in a press release.

It is an incredibly high honor for all, since prospective med students — who will become the physicians of our future — consult the magazine’s ratings when searching for the right institution to begin their training. This year’s ratings are based on statistical data and surveys of med school deans and senior faculty of peer schools, conducted in the fall of 2016 and early 2017. The factors considered include research and program quality, primary care rate, MCAT scores, research activity (as reflected by grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health), and more. In a repeat of the previous year’s results, Harvard University took second place while the University of Cincinnati ranked third.

We are so proud of our department of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief Joseph St. Geme, MD, who congratulated CHOP staff: “This ranking is a reflection of the impressive talent among our faculty, trainees, and staff and the tremendous support from the Hospital in creating a remarkable environment for clinical and academic work.”
